Beijing city and the Great Wall, China.

How can you travel the world and not visit China, one of the largest countries in the world? The 12 days we spent there were bureaucratically demanding, though not as culturally demanding as we expected. Visa applications require fixed and specific plans, so we’ve known our itinerary for months.

On our agenda: the Great Wall, of course, plus the terra cotta army, and the city of Hong Kong. We got a small sense of the paradox of China: vast yet insular, both ancient and cutting-edge, with surprising diversity and stunning conformity.
