Guwahati, India.
In the far northeast of India in the state of Assam is Guwahati, a city of 1.3 million people. Truthfully, this India stop was en route to Bhutan; it was cheapest for us to get to Paro, Bhutan from Guwahati. We spent one full day there and decided to go to the Assam State Zoo. Only about 30km from our hotel but an hour by car due to traffic, getting back via Uber was a mess.
Not having (enough) cash on hand was our biggest mistake. Given the size of the city, we incorrectly assumed it would be easy to use our credit cards. It was not.
We walked for over 3 hours waiting for the cost of an Uber to get down to the amount of cash we had, or to find an ATM that would give us cash from our American Express card. We were so hungry and tired from walking, it was well past dark, our phones batteries were dying, and we were over an hour from our hotel. Finally, I managed to get an ATM pin code for cash generated online from my Capital One credit card! The ATM was just opposite Burger King (we thought, international franchise must take American credit cards, right?), so once we had cash in hand we got chicken burgers (no beef burgers at Indian BKs!), and made our way home. PHEW.
