Walking around the world.
✅ Hike: Tiger’s Nest Monastery, Bhutan ✅
❌ Not a hike: Mall of Emirates, Dubai
✅ Hike: Kuranda Forest, Nairobi, Kenya ✅
❌ Not a hike: Hobbiton, New Zealand
That is, at least according to the Miller-Geffre definition of a hike. Technically, a hike is just a long walk, but for our list we are narrowing it down to mean walking outdoors (usually in nature), relatively challenging (usually with some elevation change), and not including museums, malls, cities, or beach walks.
This year we have truly become hikers, though that it not to say we enjoyed every one. We left two hikes incomplete due to sun and heat or (minor) injury. To avoid doubling up on scenery or arranging additional transportation, we prefer a loop hike versus an out-and-back or point-to-point route.
All Trails is an online treasure for hiking routes of all varieties; we found most of these hikes at www.alltrails.com.
We couldn’t agree on a favorite family hike (Tiger’s Nest and Goblin Forest are up there), but did agree on the lamest: Lake Mahinapua in New Zealand. Meh.
