A day in Brasov
Braşov, Romania
Tomorrow is our last day in this lovely city. We lazed around this morning a bit until the guys got hungry. I finished The Color Purple this morning and had made some chia pudding last night, so ate that for breakfast. The guys went and got a waffle.
It’s easy to find your way in this city, which makes it easy to enjoy. And it has an openness to it; it feels safe and kind and wise.
Ari decided not to do school, which he often does if there’s a choice. Playing video games isn’t the reward for him like it is for Leo. Leo will start doing school as soon as he opens his eyes in the morning.
Ari’s been into his Rubik’s Cube, though, and talks about wanting to be a speed cuber. Of course he could do it, if he practiced and practiced and stuck with it. He found a toy store on Google Earth called Jumbo that’s a 15-minute drive from here in search for a specific kind of Rubik’s Cube he found online. Since we don’t have a car, we walked to Jumbo. It’s a 90-minute walk one way, but Ari and I did it. We walked 7-and-a-half miles and clocked 20,000 steps. Phew.
Jumbo is much more than a toy store. It’s like Toys ‘r’ US + Walmart laid out in a maze like Ikea. You can’t check out until you reach the end and you can’t really backtrack. After we saw aaaaalll the toys (including Barbie “EXTRA” and some Addam’s Family “Thing” toys someone positioned giving the finger ) and picked out a cube (not the one he was looking for), we discovered there was a second floor. UGH. We weaved through aisles and aisles of candles, party favors, towels, ponytail holders, and on and on. Josh does need socks, so I picked out a few and texted him the photo: any of these work? Ari and I grabbed a few Josh-approved pairs and headed toward checkout. I wonder how many of today’s 20,000 steps we took inside the store alone.
Questions asked today:
Why do people live in New York?
Is it expensive to live in New York?
Do they still have World’s Fairs?
What year do you think you’ll die?
Into the evening, Ari got bored and crabby. It was a tiring day.
