New friends

Cape Town, South Africa

Our friend Matt offered to connect us with a former coworker of his, Steve, who lives in Nairobi with his wife, Hannah, and their two kiddos, Molly and Jack. Like a family blind date, we arrived on their doorstep to stay for a few days and luckily we hit it off! They ordered take-out Saturday evening, made us breakfast and lunch on Sunday, plus a delicious pasta dinner that night. We drank a bottle of rosΓ©, at least a six-pack of beers, and laughed a whole lot. We did 5 loads of laundry which used a ton of their hot water (they have water delivered in), and as an additional family of four, we doubled their fresh water usage (bottled drinking water).

They have two unused bedrooms we stayed in, each with an en suite bathroom, and they have a cleaner who comes twice a week. They have resources to share and they are good, generous people. How lucky we are to have met them!

We returned to Steve and Hannah’s house after we went to Lake Naivasha, which I was skeptical about. How can we hang out with them for so many days? What more is there to do and say?? On Saturday, Hannah taught Josh and the boys how to play the card game upsie-downsie while I finished the Louise Erdrich book I was reading. Perfect. Their four-year-old, Molly, became so keen on Josh. It was so sweet how she wanted to show him things and play with him.
