Science experiment

Žabljak, Montenegro

This morning the boys and I did a science experiment about pH using toothpaste. We put one egg in each of four, clear drinking glasses - two in Coke and the other two in lemon juice. We covered one of the Coke eggs and one of the lemon juice eggs with toothpaste. The results weren’t as dramatic as I hoped, but when we rinsed off the eggs 8 hours later you could see the places where the toothpaste protected the egg from erosion and staining, like how it protects the enamel and color of our teeth. Josh pulled up a pH scale online and we talked about acids and bases. A lesson in science, nutrition, and hygiene all in one.

The boys miss hands-on and group learning. I get it. Ari was begging for us to do a science experiment. The boys will be back at school in just two months and we are all beyond grateful they have a school full of classmates and skilled teachers to return to.

Yesterday at our first visit to Cafe Shambhala, Josh ordered red shakshuka (OMGYUM), Leo ordered a French omelette, and Ari the oatmeal with apples. I ordered çilbir eggs which is a savory dish - poached eggs on top of Greek yogurt with melted butter and some herbs. I didn’t love it. After that we ordered five (yes, five…so much for the nutrition portion of our morning lesson) sweet things to share: chocolate cake, lemon cake, strawberries with whipped cream, cheesecake (tasted very cheese-y), and mousse cake.

Today, we dawdled around the house too long before leaving to hike around Black Lake so were hungry on our way out the door. We stopped at Cafe Shambhala again for spinach borek, plus we wanted two straws to use for another science experiment.
