Burj Khalifa

Maybe it's the american in me, but I do appreciate anything claiming the '-est' of things. So, going up the Burj Khalifa was a definite highlight. It is spectacular! The light show which accompanies the fountain shows made me start to think I would turn around as a Cirque de Soliel show joins in. That’s all before actually going up for the view from above. Once on top, I couldn’t help but start thinking about how long it would take to reach one of the swimming pools below if you actually jumped. It’s incredible.

At over 828 metres (2,716.5 feet) and more than 160 stories, Burj Khalifa holds the following '-ests':

  • Tallest building in the world

  • Tallest free-standing structure in the world

  • Highest number of stories in the world

  • Highest occupied floor in the world

  • Highest outdoor observation deck in the world

  • Elevator with the longest travel distance in the world

  • Tallest service elevator in the world

  • Tallest structure in the world

But what also stood out to me during the complete tour and reading snippets surrounding these feats was the previous tallest structure in the world was a TV tower in North Dakota. I found it funny I needed to fly halfway around the world to come to learn that half my adult life I could have done a day-drive to see the tallest structure in the world and never knew it.
