Hong Kong VR

Hong Kong, China

I could do without Hong Kong. I mean, it’s big and bustling, I like the water, but in my opinion it’s not a must-see.

It’s different than mainland China, but not. They speak Chinese, but it’s different. I thought they spoke Cantonese, but why isn’t Cantonese on Duolingo? They use WeChat, but it’s Hong Kong WeChat. There are a million stores and a zillion things to buy, that’s the same. It’s less controlled here, though Josh said it’s leaning more toward that based on indicators like free press. Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee are from here, so that’s interesting. There was kung fu in the Kowloon Park today from 2:30 to 4:30 and several women practicing, dressed in all black.

Our hotel is attached to a huge mall. I would love a pizza and a beer, but don’t think we’ll get any good pizza until we get to New Zealand or Australia maybe?

The highlight of the day was participating in a virtual reality experience at Sandbox. The four of us chose avatars, a team name (“The MG Seekers”) and battled skeletons (were they zombies?) and goblins and a dragon in order to destroy the power shard which was stolen by whoever the baddies were, I can’t remember.

At the midpoint we were asked as a group if we want to destroy the shard or keep the power for ourselves. Without a moment’s hesitation I insisted - and would have pushed hard, if there was much more resistance - to destroy the shard. I mean, how many movies do you have to see to find out what happens to someone overcome with greed?
