Peace and fishing

Lombok, Indonesia

It was election day today (yesterday in the U.S.) and we are only on the periphery of the news cycle. It’s nice to be away from it. Our driver, Arta, said that on Lombok there are Muslims, Hindus, Christians, and they are living together peacefully. All the holidays are celebrated, and there isn’t angst among people because of their differences. Not bad for 3 million people. I wonder how true it is.

We caught about 50 fish today, about 10 different kinds. I caught 7 or 8 of them. They were all different shapes and colors, none of them had I ever seen up close much less caught on a fishing pole. The weight on the pole was much heavier than we’re used to, the line so much thicker and the reel harder to pull in. It always felt like there was a fish on the end.

The extended time in the sun is starting to affect us, or at least Josh and I. The heat, humidity, and relentless sun takes a lot of energy to process. It’s quite depleting. Luckily there is ample time to rest.
